Our Mission
Daniel J. Glass, PhD, ABPP, a board-certified clinical psychologist who studied the psychophysics of the auditory system as a student at the University of Pennsylvania, founded Yuni Technologies to help people with single-sided deafness (SSD) / unilateral hearing loss (UHL). Several people close to Dan have SSD / UHL, and as a result he decided to use his knowledge to develop the technology behind the Yuni to allow them to experience their favorite music in the same way that others enjoy.
Do you listen to music, watch movies or TV, or play video games through headphones? Then you probably know how important stereo sound is to the experience: how the panning of music immerses you in the song, how directional sound effects immerse you in the scene, or how the light thump of footsteps in one ear warns you of an approaching enemy.
If you are among the hundreds of millions of people worldwide with UHL, however, this may be a joy you have never experienced. UHL is estimated to affect 7.2% of adult Americans. Moreover, 3 in 100 children are estimated to develop some form of unilateral hearing loss by school age as the result of bacterial meningitis, malformations of the ear canal, acoustic neuroma, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVA), premature birth, or other causes.
The mission of Yuni Technologies is to help people with SSD / UHL enjoy stereo sound despite only being able to listen with a single ear. Towards this end, we donate Yunis to SSD / UHL organizations and individuals in need. If you would like to support our mission by donating a headphone, please click here.
